Program Notes:
Three Primordial Waters was commissioned by flutist Kate O'Leary and clarinetist John Giordano. I was inspired to write this piece based on three fantasy concepts of water that I imagined up when I was a child. Water can both be fluid and rigid, static and nimble, shimmering and dim. I wanted to portray these concepts through texture and timbre with the interplay of water-like gestures and motions, the distance of harmonies, register, and shifts in meters and rhythms. Each movement features a different instrument as the primary voice, with movement I featuring the flute, movement II featuring the saxophone, and movement III featuring the clarinet.
